Welcome to BSA Troop 44

Troop 44 aims to build a well rounded scout through encouraging advancement, service to community, local camping outings, merit badge achievement, and fostering personal growth and responsibility.  The patrol method is practiced during all troop activities.  Boys grow and learn a variety of skills by taking part in many diverse scouting activities rather than focused on one particular discipline.  We hold troop meetings weekly; Troop PLC after each outing, and monthly Troop Committee meetings.  We look forward to new scouts joining, and making them feel that they are welcome contributors.

Our 2013 camping destinations have included climbing at Stonemoves and Reimer Ranch, biking at Stephen F. Austin State Park, CAMPOREE and WTSE at Camp Brosig, canoeing in the Big Thicket National Preserve near Lumberton, tubing on Lake Conroe, and shooting at a family ranch.  We attended Camp Trevor Rees-Jones for summer camp southeast of Dallas.  Our plans for early 2014 include: backpacking, horseback riding, sailing, and Camp Hornaday Merit Badge Camp at Lost Pines.  This year we plan to attend summer camp at Kia Kima Scout Ranch in Arkansas for base campers and High Adventure campers.  We participate in district events like Camporee, Webelos to Scout Exposition (WTSE), and monthly Roundtable.

The troop collects a one-time registration fee of $75 for new scouts. Thereafter, a renewal fee of $35 is collected annually in December.  Scouts dues of 50¢ are collected at each meeting by the Patrol Leader and turned into the Scribe.  Fundraising opportunities are provided throughout the year for scouts to earn monies go into individual scout accounts, which Scouts can use to help pay for campout fees, summer camp, or individual scout camping equipment, i.e. sleeping bags, etc. For troop meetings, boys need to attend regularly, be on time, bring their Boy Scout handbook and wear their Scout shirts.  We regularly recite the Pledge of Allegiance, Scout Oath, and Scout Law.  The Scout Slogan and Motto are also learned and practiced.

For camping, scouts need their own mess kit, knife/fork/spoon, bedroll (sleeping bag), chair, sleeping pad, and a water bottle.  For summer camp, scouts will need a cot and a foot locker.  Prior to a camping trip, scouts participating will plan their meals/menu and provide grub money (typically $10) for one member in the patrol to purchase the food.

We encourage parent participation in the troop committee and participation in various troop helper activities.  Parents are also encouraged to volunteer as outing participants to help with transport and for an opportunity to observe your son participate in boy-led activities.  Parents interested in leadership positions attend district training offered bi-annually. If interested, please ask about how you can help with our Troop Committee functions, merit badge counseling or as an Assistant Scoutmaster!
